Confronted with serious allegations, the director of the Federation of BiH’s Financial Intelligence Agency, Esad Mahmutovic, offered a response which shocked the Western Balkans. The allegations were related to his choice to employ the daughter of the Prime Minister of FBiH, Fadil Novalic, without an open competition, as required by law. Mahmutovic’s shocking statement developed as follows: ‘That is my right guaranteed by law. If you ask me about the employment of Ada Novalic, she is legally employed. If anyone is responsible for her employment, I am responsible. Fadil Novalic didn’t hire her, it was me. If someone else came here they would hire that person anyway. I must have my team that will support me’.
The case of Ada Novalić is not an isolated one. Negra Mašović, another daughter of a politician (Amor Mašović’s) also found decent job in this agency – “From the moral aspect isn’t mister Amor Mašović deserved his child to work”, he stated (and stayd alive).
The way the director justified nepotism was that the job was ‘reserved for those with the strongest background’ or a form of ‘self-interpreted moral aspect’, a means which in a certain way reflects everything that is wrong with this society and highlights the hypocrisy manifested by the ruling class.
Fortunately, activists gathered under the name of ‘ The Association of Children without Prime Minister Care’ wrote letters to the Prime Minister of FBiH Fadil Novalić, with a request for adoption. Letters were also sent to the director of FBiH’s Financial Intelligence Agency, Esad Mahmutović, to inform him about new developments related to ‘suitable background’ as well as to Lars-Gunnar Wigemark, the Head of the EU Delegation in Bosnia-Herzegovina with the measures that need to be taken to become more sexy on the labor market.
